About Shattered Globe Theatre
Founded in 1991, Shattered Globe Theatre is an 18-member Equity ensemble company with a longstanding reputation as one of Chicago’s best small theatres. Shattered Globe is best known for its character-driven interpretations of contemporary classic theatre and newer works, including such recent successes as Judgment at Nuremberg, Coyote on a Fence, The House of Blue Leaves, Dealer's Choice and Come Back, Little Sheba. Dedicated to the philosophy of ensemble, it is the mission of Shattered Globe to produce work that “dissects, challenges and revels in the American experiment; raises questions rather than espousing philosophy; stimulates growth in and broadens the perspective of both artist and audience; and pushes the boundaries of excellence in ensemble theatre.” During its first ten years as a non-Equity company, SGT was nominated for 58 Jeff Citations, of which it won 34. Since becoming an Equity organization in 2002, SGT has received ten nominations and won one Jeff Award, in addition to garnering two After Dark awards for best ensemble. This past fall, SGT was featured on the front page of the New York Times arts section for its hit revival of William Inge's Come Back, Little Sheba, a production that was also named among the top picks of 2006 by every major media outlet in Chicago. Operating on a budget projected to grow to $240,000 in FY08, Shattered Globe produces a three-show subscription season from its artistic home at the Victory Gardens Greenhouse Theater in Lincoln Park, where the company has been in residence since 2001.
Position Description
Working closely with the Board of Directors, Artistic Director, and artistic ensemble, the Managing Director of Shattered Globe Theatre will provide visionary leadership in all major administrative areas of the organization:
Finance and Administration:
- Report directly to Board of Directors at bi-monthly meetings and as needed.
- Develop annual operating budget and cash flow projections, and provide consistent monitoring of financial operations.
- Negotiate artist and production contracts and maintain appropriate communications with unions.
- Ensure accurate, timely setup of Equity payroll through outside payroll service.
- Maintain and provide information as needed for annual audit.
- Serve as primary liaison with Victory Gardens Theater staff regarding space rental, audience services, and other resident company-related issues.
- Recruit and supervise company interns.
Development:
- Foster existing relationships with foundation, government, corporate and individual donors, and proactively seek new funding opportunities.
- Work with existing Board of Directors to increase Board membership and create committee structure.
- Assist in the planning and execution of annual Martinis at the Mart gala and other fundraising events throughout the year.
- Implement existing plans to launch Junior Board of Directors and secondary sizeable fundraising event.
- Ensure accurate recordkeeping and timely acknowledgment of contributions.
Marketing & PR:
- Plan and implement subscription and single-ticket marketing campaigns.
- Work with contract graphic designer to develop season and production marketing collateral.
- Contract and work with press agent on season, production, and special event PR.
- Hire and supervise production photographer and videographer.
- Maintain archive of all press and print advertising.
- Create and distribute email marketing communications.
- Ensure maintenance of company website and MySpace page.
Artist Relations
- Work with production manager to create and ensure adherence to appropriate production budgets.
- Create and oversee artist comp ticket policy and industry ticket requests.
- Assist with casting as needed.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in theatre, arts management, business, or a related field (MA, MBA, or MFA preferred) and a minimum of three to five years of management experience demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility. Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite, including Access, is required. Experience with QuickBooks, eTapestry, and web editing skills a plus. Candidate should possess excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to thrive in a fast-paced environment, and possess an understanding of how a small non-profit organization operates.
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with experience and includes a generous vacation policy.
